Abstract:

Du Fu’s poetry is hailed as the poetic history of an age, belonging to the realm of Truth. Filled with compassion for the sufferings of the people and love for all living things under heaven, his verses reach the pinnacle of Goodness. With exquisite linguistic craftsmanship, he creates a stunning array of Beauty for readers. We measure the greatness of this Sage of Poetry against the three dimensions of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty, yet we must develop an extraordinary understanding of what these three ideals truly mean. This lecture will explore these ideas through close readings of Du Fu’s most celebrated poems.
